Does Light the Torch Play Devil You Know Songs

He requires no introduction to readers of Metal Injection.Howard Jonesis one of the preeminent voices of the decade, occupying a space of the metalcore'south Mt. Rushmore, and he's earned the adoration and respect of fans and peers for baking performances across decades of the rocky rise of heavy metal.

Jones, alongside partners-in-crimeFrancesco Artusato(guitar), andRyan Wombacher(bass), are set to unleash the adjacent bold affiliate ofLight The Torch, Y'all Will Be The Death of Me, on June 25th throughNuclear Blast.

Jones sat down with Metal Injection for a deep dive into the dark globe of Light The Torch'due south new album, his revived dearest of touring, the end ofDevil Yous Know, re-teaming and reminiscing on his former bandKillswitch Engage, his personal struggles with fame and the grind of the road and much more than!

On the COVID-xix Pandemic

I had definitely gotten to a point where I was enjoying touring once again, which surprised me. It took a long menses of time. And it's like, OK, I'm enjoying this once again, I'm enjoying the grind of information technology. I'd say that was probably in the 2017 era. That's when I really started enjoying the chore again. And so things started picking upward, and then just this die down is weird because we had a lot of touring. We're ready and you write and get out on the road over again, and just to have it kind of disappear, it's similar OK, what do you do to brand the all-time of this?

At the same time information technology's a squeamish recharge, but for me, I need to exist engaged. For me balancing is me beingness outdoors a lot, and that's kind of like an everyday affair. But so it helps me just be able to do this obsessive weird dive that I do into music. So for me it's a balance that can be a fiddling precarious at times. But I don't know, I'm enjoying it. And so that'south what this time was. It was a bummer non getting to bout with my band and we finally got the album finished. Now nosotros're getting to put it out, but at the same time, yeah, I've enjoyed kind of having a design of go out, so record, go out, write, record, get out.

I was just doing it in different parts of the country and everything. But just for me it worked out. And also I'm kind of anti-social. Other than the things that affected everyone, just people, whether it'due south friends or family that were affected by COVID and then simply the separation, that part was a little rough. Just at the same time I fabricated the well-nigh of it.

On Heavy Themes on You Will Be The Decease of Me

I mean, to some extent I recollect it is (a darker, more in looking record). Simply at the same fourth dimension I feel like this is what I've been doing for a very long fourth dimension. Then I estimate I've got some more than stuff to work through. I'chiliad terrible with people. So for me there'southward always going to be subject field affair. I think that'due south been kind of the take away from this as I've been doing interviews, that this one feels intense. At that place's a heaviness to it. And simply everything that we were going through we actually put it into this. So yeah, the album has a feel, it actually has a mood to it. Interesting that that's getting picked up on. There's still some bursts of light.

I call back I've always been fascinated with light and dark in people in my ain nature, that sort of affair. Just yeah, this i is not that cheerful. Information technology was born out of a lotof rough time individually. That's kind of what Fran, Ryan and I kind of bond. We have been through a lot in a relatively curt period of fourth dimension. We just dumped a lot of emotion into this ane.

On the Importance of Band-Chemistry

I recollect it'south even more than of import than I thought it was. It's great when y'all're working together with people that you similar and respect and are friends with. And so it's only a plus, especially when you have religion in those people. I've been very lucky to piece of work with the people I have. I've fortunately got to write all this stuff with them. And merely beingness able to get along, getting a absurd vibe is very important for me. If I don't enjoy it, I'yard out. But that's just me. I've been doing it for a long fourth dimension. For me, information technology'due south just similar information technology'southward not that this will become on forever. So if I do information technology I'm doing it considering I truly enjoy it. And so right at present I've just been enjoying information technology.

And so to accept Fran as a writing partner, there'southward simply a few people in the earth that I respect more and who I'm just fascinated past. He just gets interested in things, then he only figures information technology out and does it. He'due south one of those guys "that looks cool I'grand going to try that," and he's just skilful at information technology. You meet those kind of people and and so yous come across the special kind of people like that. He's one of those. To take this family unit thing that we accept, information technology's pretty cool because I'm non a social animal. And so for me to be able to live with them during the writing and recording process and to exist at that level where we've shared so much, it'southward like that'southward a big bargain. It really is.

On the Status of Drummer Alex RĂ¼dinger

We just needed someone to record and he was the guy nosotros asked and he said yes. Nosotros haven't had whatever discussions like that (him joining the band full-time). He'due south a busy dude. But the affair is he killed information technology. I mean, the way he prepares and he's just a blast to be around. He's a monster.

On the End of Devil You Know

There'due south similarities (with DYK and Light The Torch) … but equally far as we're concerned it'southward dead. It was kind of symbolic when you're just throwing away hundreds of Devil You lot Know t-shirts. Nosotros gave it a proper burial. It's part of the story, but we had to allow it go. At that place was just too much negativity. And so it needed to be cutting, and an fifty-fifty better way to modify the name, change the style of music, merely it'south still the guys who were bonded together to practise it. Information technology'southward a completely separate thing. And I don't know how many of those songs will ever meet the light of day from us in a alive setting, but information technology's just part of the journey.

On Struggles & Rejuvenated Love of the Music Business organization

It changes you and time evolves yous. I like to remember that I'k open up to change and development. Yes, information technology'south a weird journey. At times I look dorsum and say, oh wow, I don't even recollect myself from five years ago, let alone 10, fifteen or 20. I don't know. To me I kind of enjoy that. I mean, my life is so bizarre, but at the aforementioned time I savor it. I've been very fortunate to become to do what I do. And I know I've sacrificed a lot of my life to proceed to do this.

And there are people who are able to have some normalcy in their professional life and in their personal life. I've never been able to do that. So to have some sort of residuum, even though to most people I probably work too much, simply I love it. And so yeah, to be in this place where I can do this and simply kind of be defended to it, I'1000 pretty fortunate. I actually didn't see it coming, merely I had proficient help on the way, just from the guys in the band and guys outside the band. I've got a cool small circle and that's kind of what helped. It was just time and it gave me aid when I needed it. And and so here we are.

On Introduction to Heavy Metal Music

I don't know if it was anything in particular, but I tin can definitely say my journey into heavy music I tin place on one person. And that'south my buddy Jeremy back in Ohio. He's the one that, being with him, all of a sudden I'm getting exposed to a lot of music. I listened to radio and stuff like that all the time. Merely then he's the 1 that actually exposed me to metal and death metal, just all that. Then it was kind of him. Age of fourteen or 15, he's simply got tapes and CDs and I just started arresting it. I but loved it. That was kind of it.

I remember it was like '85 when we started listening to Stryper. That time you're just pulling from all this stuff. So I'm watching MTV, but I'yard still listening to everything. If I can get my ears on it I'one thousand arresting information technology. That was a expert time for me.

On Re-Teaming/Reminiscing on Killswitch Engage

For me it'due south just fun. I mean, I'm getting to hang out with Jesse and the guys on stage and the free energy, it'southward but different. We've all gotten older and are all in different places in life, and it'southward really absurd to reconnect with them like that. And yeah, they asked, I'm down. It'southward been a lot of fun. I definitely didn't expect it. It was just cool from the start where we all finally got to sit down and hang out and talk and express joy and be silly. And and so to be to this point where nosotros get to tour together and just exercise this. Pretty fortunate, pretty fortunate guy.

It's this office of my life where I grew upward suddenly. I did not expect what happened. There'south so many fantastic memories, and so that really does outweigh some of the negatives that happen. So for me I didn't know what the music globe was. I didn't know what existent touring was similar and just the attention and all that. And nevertheless, at the same time just considering I went through that, that's how I got to where I am at present. And that's how I got to encounter and so many different people and get to piece of work with those guys in that ring. That'southward where I learned how to practice what I exercise.

For me at that place are no regrets. I just wish I'd learned to accept help quicker and I wouldn't accept simply been so easy to push button away when they were trying to reach out because they saw me diving and going deeper. It was rough, but it just took some time for me to effigy out how to actually accept help from people and effigy out how to tour and exist somewhat normal, fifty-fifty though I'm pretty weird.

I didn't know that stopping that for a while, and not having a phone for about three and a half years, I didn't realize that this is a good affair for me. Information technology's but a weird journey and time is simply a large role of it. Naught is quick. I wish solutions had come faster, but that's simply not the mode life works. Then over time, here we are, able to talk back and talk most this and look back on it and say yep, there really were some amazing things that happened. I'm really fortunate that I still get to do this stuff, considering when I was done, I thought I was washed. I actually did.

On Returning to Touring

It's what we dear to practise. It'due south what some of us take sacrificed everything to do or we're born to do or whatsoever y'all want to phone call it. It's going to be a really good time. Only the energy is going to be insane. It'southward going to be different. And for me it'south besides that time together with those guys. That's where we bonded, and so we're looking forrard to it. It's that crawling that just keeps wanting to get scratched actually bad.
